BASKING RIDGE, NJ - The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center, located at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge, New Jersey has opened registration for Eco-Explorers, a summer science and nature program for children ages 7 to 9.

Eco-Explorers offers a series of 3 two-week and 2 one-week summer sessions of day-long programming exploring nature and science through hiking, canoeing, games, crafts, and exciting day trips. The Naturalist-led series takes a hands-on approach to learning through creative expression, educational games, imagination, nature exploration, and physical skill development. Each of the five sessions offers field trips, guest speakers, nature walks, canoeing, swimming, games, arts and crafts, and more.

Eco-Explorers runs from 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Monday through Friday.

The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center is located within Lord Stirling Park, in the Basking Ridge section of Bernards Township, and is nestled within 425 acres of the western portion of the Great Swamp Basin of the Passaic River. A swamp vivarium, and an environmentally based library are located within the Center itself.

Blue “BOBO (Buy One - Bring One) Fridays” bins now are located at the Environmental Education Center and Lord Stirling Stable in Basking Ridge, as well as at the Somerset County Park Commission headquarters at North Branch Park in Bridgewater. The public is invited to drop off canned food or personal-care items for donation to Somerset County food banks.

Mega Mammals

Thursday, February 16 from 4:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M.

Children ages 4 to 6 will learn about the larger species of mammals

through crafts, stories, and games. Theme is “Rhinos and Hippos.”

Snowy Day

Thursday, February 16 from 4:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M.

Children ages 7 to 9 will learn how animals use snow to their advantage

while hiking, making snow animals, and creating snowy crafts.

Sunday, February 19 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

Children ages 7 to 9 will join a Naturalist to chew, blow, and pop their

way through the history of gum, including making some gum to

take home and enjoy.

Family and friends will join a Naturalist to learn about birds and what they

Therapeutic Rec Yoga Program - February 23

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION OFFERS SOCIAL STORY YOGA

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Somerset County Park Commission Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Department is offering “Social Story Yoga,” a new and exciting children's program for ages 7 to 12 with a developmental disability. The program will combine social stories, music, and movement activities to encourage self - esteem building, playfulness, and appropriate social skills.

Under the guidance of a special education teacher and certified yoga instructor, children will learn activities that can be used as tools to help reduce stress and build social confidence. Participants will also learn strategies for self - regulation, including breathing practices to calm the body and mind, and postures for strength and balance.

Social Story Yoga is scheduled for Thursday evenings from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., February 23, March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2012 at the TR Activity Center, North Branch Park, 355 Milltown Road, Bridgewater, New Jersey. Fee for the program is $54 and only children residing in Somerset County eligible municipalities may participate.

The Therapeutic Recreation Department provides recreation opportunities for any child or adult with a developmental disability who needs specially designed programs. Residents must reside in one of Somerset County's 16 participating communities. TR promotes an active leisure lifestyle that improves social, physical, cognitive and emotional functioning and health while enhancing abilities, using recreation to help people with disabilities to develop and use their leisure in ways that support health, functional abilities, educational needs, independence and quality of life.

Valentine's Day Horseback Ride February 12

SHOW THE LOVE AT THE VALENTINE’S DAY HORSEBACK RIDE

Registration Opens Monday, January 30, 2012

BASKING RIDGE, NJ - Lord Stirling Stable will host the first “I Love Horses” Valentine Introductory Ride on Sunday, February 12, 2012. Check-in time for this western-style ride is 1:00 P.M. and the ride is from 1:30 to 3:00 P.M. Lord Stirling Stable is located at 256 South Maple Avenue in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

Individuals with little or no riding experience are welcome to enjoy a brief group lesson with one of Lord Stirling Stable’s certified riding instructors, followed by a one-hour guided ride through the scenic trails of Lord Stirling Park. Trail guides will be happy to answer questions and attempt to identify the various plants, birds and animals that may be encountered along the trails.

Youth and adults who weigh less than 240 lbs. and are at least 9 years of age may participate. Riders between 9 and 18 years old must be registered by a parent or legal guardian. Participants 9-11 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian on the ride.

Registration opens on Monday, January 30, 2012 in the Stable office and continues through Thursday, February 9, 2012 as space permits. The fee for the ride is $35 for Somerset County residents and $45 for non-residents. A certified equestrian helmet and shoes or boots with hard, smooth soles and a definite heel are required and may be borrowed from the Stable for the event.

Rebel is very excited about his opportunity to post real-time updates on weather related program notes, special events, carrot requests, and anything else that comes to his mind. He is one VSE (Very Small Equine) with quite a lot to say!

Rebel is a miniature horse who gives lead line pony rides to the smallest of the children who visit Lord Stirling Stable located at 256 South Maple Avenue in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. He is just under 10 hands high, about the size of a St. Bernard.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ - Somerset County Park Commission Lord Stirling Stable has announced the dates for the Winter Equine Mini-Workshop 102, designed for individuals who are seeking to gain knowledge and confidence around horses through a combination of non-riding activities and hands-on experience.

Winter Mini-Workshop 102 will be held at Lord Stirling Stable, 256 South Maple Avenue in Basking Ridge, NJ beginning Saturday, February 11, 2012. Classes will meet for 5 consecutive Saturdays from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

Students will build upon their experiences in Mini Workshop 101, which is a pre-requisite for this class. Advanced topics including nutrition, clipping, bandaging, and basic conformation will be explored, and the important roles the farrier and veterinarian play in a horse’s life will be discussed. There is no riding involved in this program.

Registration is now open and will be available up to the opening day of the Workshop as space permits. Fee is $55 for Somerset County residents and $92.50 for non-residents.

Minimize Your Carbon Footprint from April 1 Through April 15, 2012

BASKING RIDGE, NJ – In the continuing effort to educate the public sector on methods of saving energy and reducing the individual “carbon footprint,” the Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center has organized its fourth annual “Eco-Rally.” The prior events have involved over 1,000 participants each year.

Beginning Sunday, April 1 and concluding Sunday, April 15, 2012, participating individuals, families, and work, social, or school groups will have an opportunity to maintain a daily log of everyday tasks that serve to reduce the use of energy and promote a greener lifestyle. Recommended actions include turning off lights when leaving a room, cycling or walking instead of driving, utilizing reusable bags when shopping, planting a native garden or tree, carrying lunch in reusable containers, and other methods of saving energy.

Participants are asked to create a display of posters or pictures representing their contribution to the environment. Projects will be exhibited from April 24 through May 6 at the Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. The Eco-Rally Ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 2:00 p.m..

“The Eco-Rally provides an opportunity for individuals to become aware of the little things that people can do as part of their every day lives that serve to minimize their carbon footprint,” stated Carrie Springer, Naturalist at the Environmental Education Center. “The Eco-Rally reinforces the fact that these very important actions are easy to accomplish and little by little, create a significant positive impact on the environment.”

Maple Sugar Demonstrations at EEC Though March 11

Free weekend programs February 4 through March 11, 2012

BASKING RIDGE, NJ - Continuing a tradition in the Northeast United States that was begun centuries ago by Native Americans and colonists, the Somerset County Park Commission invites children and adults to a 90-minute program to witness how Maple Trees are tapped, learn about sap collecting methods from the past and present, and experience the boiling process that produces delicious New Jersey Maple Syrup.

Free public programs take place at the sugar shack on Saturdays and Sundays, February 4 & 5; February 11 & 12; February 18 & 19; February 25 & 26; March 3 & 4; and March 10 & 11. Saturday maple sugar program times are at 10:00 AM, 12:00 Noon, and 2:00 PM. Sunday maple sugar program times are at 12:00 Noon, and 2:00 PM. Participants should allow at least twenty minutes to walk from the Center to the sugar shack. Organized groups, such as Scouts, may schedule demonstrations during one of the time blocks by contacting the EEC at 908-766-2489, ext. 332.

The ”Sugar Shack,” run by the Somerset County Park Commission Naturalists, is a one-half mile walk through the forest from the Environmental Education Center building at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge, NJ. Along the way, visitors will witness the Great Swamp in a setting that summer visitors never see. Trails are well marked and easy to follow. The site is accessible to mobility impaired individuals with forty-eight hours notice providing that weather and ground conditions permit.

Naturalist Rich Hoffman, coordinator of the program stated, “Not only do people learn about the manufacture of maple syrup, but they also learn about history, technology, food production, trees, and wildlife. But, what I like most about the program is that it is fun to be in the winter woods, smelling the sweetness coming from the sugar house and being near the warmth of the fire.”

BASKING RIDGE, NJ – The ever-popular Saturday Dog Walks at Somerset County Park Commission Lord Stirling Stable will help you and your best friends stay fit and healthy through the winter. The Friends of Lord Stirling Stable host the weekly event on the Stable grounds at 256 South Maple Avenue.

Check-in time begins each week at 10:15AM. The guided trail walk will commences at 10:30AM and lasts for approximately one hour.

Registration is $3 per dog and all pets must be leashed and kept under control at all times. These sanctioned Dog Walks offer participants the only opportunity to explore the beautiful equestrian trails of Lord Stirling Stable on foot.

WEDDING CEREMONY/PHOTO RESERVATIONS ACCEPTED

BEGINNING TUESDAY, JANUARY 3, 2012

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Horticulture Department of the Somerset County Park Commission will accept reservations for wedding ceremonies and pictures at the following locations beginning Tuesday, January 3, 2012: Colonial Park Gardens, namely the Arboretum; the Perennial Garden; the Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden; and the Shrub Collection. The Leonard J. Buck Garden is accepting reservations for wedding photography permits only. The fee for each garden is $95.00 per hour.

The Colonial Park Gardens are located in Colonial Park, Somerset, (Franklin Township), New Jersey.

The one-acre Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden is an accredited All-America Rose Selections display garden, comprising one acre of plantings with more than 3,000 roses in more than 325 varieties. The garden is at its peak of color and fragrance from late spring into autumn.

The Perennial Garden is a beautiful five-acre garden with a gazebo that provides year-round interest and color from its collection of flowering shrubs, bulbs, perennials, and annuals.

The 144-acre Arboretum includes the areas surrounding the Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden and the Perennial Garden and provides displays of flowering trees, evergreens, shade trees, dwarf conifers, and flowering shrubs.

The three-acre Shrub Collection showcases plants that grow well in central NJ and are designed to give year-round interest by using flowering shrubs, trees, perennials, and ornamental grasses.

The Leonard J. Buck Garden, located at 11 Layton Road in Far Hills, is a unique naturalistic garden of great beauty. Well-known for its numerous wildflowers, shrubs, and beautiful shade trees, this woodland rock garden is the perfect setting for spectacular wedding photos. This 13-acre rock garden is set within a 29-acre natural woodland area and features a rustic gazebo and bridges, sparkling pond, flowing stream, and winding paths leading to your memorable wedding photo site.

Volunteers Needed for USGA National Championship

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR NATIONAL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP AT NESHANIC VALLEY GOLF COURSE IN JUNE 2012

BRIDGEWATER, NJ – The Somerset County Park Commission and the United States Golf Association (USGA) are seeking volunteers to support the 2012 U.S. Woman’s Amateur Public Links Championship that will be contested from Monday, June 18 to Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Neshanic Valley Golf Course, 2301 South Branch Road, Neshanic Station, New Jersey.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship was inaugurated in 1977 as an opportunity for public-course players to compete for a national championship. It is open to female amateur golfers who are bona fide public-course players and who hold a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 18.4. Participants in the 2012 Championship will have qualified for play at sectional competition contested throughout the United States. It is one of only 13 national championships conducted by the USGA annually.

Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and are needed to serve as on-course marshals, support for scoring and transportation, and a variety of other functions throughout the six-day championship. Individuals volunteering are required to purchase official uniform shirts at $25.00 each or a shirt and hat for $30.00. The official shirt must be worn while on duty, matched with the individual’s own khaki slacks, Bermuda-style shorts, or skirts.

Volunteers who work a minimum of three 6-hour shifts during the course of the week will be invited to play in the “Supporters and Volunteers” outing that will take place at Neshanic Valley during the week following the Championship.

PARK FOUNDATION SEEKS HISTORIC PARK PHOTOS

BRIDGEWATER, NJ – The Somerset County Park Foundation is seeking historic photos of Somerset County parks for inclusion in a “History of the Somerset County Parks,” a 50-year chronicle of the development of the nationally renowned park system.

The hard cover book will address how and why the Somerset County park system was formed, provide a history of the various properties that now comprise the county parks, and showcase the highlights of each facility.

Photos are being sought for facilities including Duke Island Park in Bridgewater, Colonial Park in Franklin Township, Washington Valley Park in Bridgewater; Washington Rock Park in Green Brook, Leonard J. Buck Garden in far Hills, North Branch Park in Bridgewater, Green Knoll Golf Course in Bridgewater, Quail Brook and Spooky Brook Golf Courses in Franklin Township, Warrenbrook Golf Course in Warren, Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge, Sourland Mountain Preserve in Hillsborough and Montgomery, Natirar in Peapack-Gladstone, and Little Brook Sanctuary in Bernardsville.

“TRAVELING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS” FOR ALL AGES

BASKING RIDGE, NJ – The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center (EEC) Naturalists will be taking enjoyable, educational, and informative nature-based presentations on the road.

A number of Naturalist-presented PowerPoint lecture and discussion programs will be presented at locations across Somerset County including senior centers, senior housing facilities, schools, social and civic clubs, day care centers, and more. Fees for various programs to be determined at booking.

The presentations are appropriate for a wide variety of audiences of all ages and may be tailored to the specific needs, interests, ages, and time frame of the requesting organization. Naturalists will provide all equipment necessary for the presentation.

Among the topics scheduled for presentation are: Backyard Bears; Backyard Birds; Backyard Invaders; The Bee’s Knees; Coyote Cries; Deer Wrangling!; Holy White Nose, Bat Girl; Vital Vernals; Leave it to Beaver; Off the Coast; and Planning a Native Butterfly Garden. NESHANIC STATION, NJ – The Somerset County Park Commission Neshanic Valley Golf Course, located at 2301 South Branch Road in Neshanic Station, has again been honored for environmental stewardship, earning the 2011 Sustainable Business Award from the South Branch Watershed Association (SBWA). Andrew Hojnowski, Manager of Golf Maintenance at Neshanic Valley accepted the award on behalf of the Neshanic Valley staff at the Sustainable Raritan River Conference at Rutgers University on Thursday, June 16, 2011.

“The Park Commission golf staff has two primary goals, to provide our guests with the best golfing experience possible while protecting and preserving the environment,” commented Darrell Marcinek, Director of Golf Maintenance. “Because of their dedication and professionalism we are successful on both fronts.”

In addition to the current award, Neshanic Valley has been recognized by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for preservation and enhancement of the wildlife habitat and protection of natural resources; by the New Jersey Water Supply Authority as a “River-Friendly” facility based on operational and maintenance practices; and recognized for Environmental Stewardship by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The facility has also been recognized as a Groundwater Guardian Green Site by the Groundwater Foundation.

ALL County Golf Courses Now Accessible to All Players

The Somerset County Park Commission purchased 4 new SoloRider electric golf carts to accommodate golfers with disabilities. SoloRider carts are now on site at all 5 County operated golf courses - Neshanic Valley in Branchburg, Green Knoll Golf Coures in Bridgewater, Quail Brook and Spookly Brook Golf Course in Franklin Township, and Warrenbrook Golf Course in Warren.

Carts were available on-site at Neshanic Valley Golf Course and the Academy Course at Neshanic Valley for the past two years. When needed at other facilities, the carts were transported by Park Commission personnel. The additional carts will enable the Commission to have one cart available at all times at all facilities.

The single seat golf cart allows golfers with limited mobility to continue to enjoy any of the five Somerset County public courses. The carts are designed to allow golfers to play using the elevated seat, to ride on greens with no impact on the turf, to maintain stability over rough terrain, and allow ease of enter and exit with a 350 degree swivel seat.

The dates of the event are June 18 through June 23, 2012.

“This national championship will bring well-earned recognition to Neshanic Valley, one of the finest municipal golf complexes in the country,” commented Bob Ransone, Deputy Director, Golf Division for the Somerset County Park Commission. “The selection of Neshanic Valley is a tribute to our staff and the leadership and direction provided by the Park Commissioners. This event will be a source of great pride for every citizen of Somerset County.”

In 2011, the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship will be played at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore., from June 27-July 2.

“GROUNDWATER GUARDIAN”

The Somerset County Park Commission Neshanic Valley Golf Course, located at 2301 South Branch Road in Neshanic Station, has received another recognition for environmental stewardship, earning the status as a “Groundwater Guardian Green Site” by The Groundwater Foundation. This honor follows the recent certification as an “Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” by the Audubon International program and recognition as a “River-Friendly Golf Course” by the New Jersey Water Supply Authority (NJWSA).

The Groundwater Guardian (GG) Green Site program was developed to recognize the efforts of stewards of green spaces to implement, measure, and document groundwater-friendly practices. The program monitors practices related to pesticide and fertilizer use, water use, pollution prevention, water quality, and environmental stewardship.  

The recognition is earned after careful documentation of the environmental impact of groundwater friendly practices including pounds of fertilizer saved annually by using lower input, gallons of water saved annually by using low water/maintenance plant materials, amounts of toxic substances disposed of properly, and other related items.

“This is another well-earned recognition for Neshanic Valley, proving that we can maintain the highest quality golfing experience while still protecting the environment around us,” commented Darrell Marcinek, Director of Golf Maintenance. “It is a tribute to our staff and the leadership and direction provided by the Park Commissioners.”

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary recognizes Neshanic Valley for preservation and enhancement of the wildlife habitat and protection of natural resources. To reach certification, a golf course must demonstrate a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas including Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.

The “River-Friendly” designation was based on operational and maintenance practices recommended by the NJWSA “River Friendly” program. Actions at Neshanic Valley resulted in the reduction of the contribution to non-point source pollution and improvement of the wildlife habitat on and near the course. In addition, the golf course has been recognized for its Environmental Stewardship by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Become a "Friend" of Lord Stirling Stable

The Friends of Lord Stirling Stable (FLSS) are a hard working volunteer group of junior and adult horse lovers who support the activities of the Somerset County Park Commission Lord Stirling Stable. By contributing their ideas, their time, and donating revenue generated from sponsored events, the Friends have helped to provide a continuing and expanding program of activities at the Stable.

A non-profit organization, the Friends group was formed in 1984 and has built a membership base of more than 300. The positive relationship developed between the Friends and the Somerset County Park Commission has produced long-term mutual benefit, advancing the quality and variety of programs at the Stable.

Among the annual activities organized and supported by the Friends are: Nature Rides, Pleasure Drives, Dressage Shows, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Rides, Dog Days, Canine Scavenger Hunts, Weekly Dog Walks, the Salute to Horse Power Car and Motorcycle Show, the Winter Holiday Festival, and various riding clinics throughout the year. Events that are run in partnership with the Park Commission include the Combined Driving Event, Hunter Paces, and Family Fun Day.

The FLSS School Horse Retirement Program finds suitable new homes for horses retiring from the Lord Stirling Stable lesson program. The program ensures that retiring horses continue to be loved and well cared for even with their limitations. The Friends maintain a fund used to cover costs of board and care for these horses until a suitable home is found.

In addition to the numerous hours contributed by the Friends, their efforts have resulted in major donations to the physical environment at the Stable, improving the facility for everyone who takes advantage of this valuable asset throughout the year.

Special Golf Rates for Active Military

The Somerset County Park Commissioners today approved a resolution implementing a special “Active Military Golf Rate for Military Personnel” currently serving our country. The “in-county” rates will apply at all five County-operated golf courses.

The resolution was presented to New Jersey State Senator Kip Bateman acknowledging the Commissioners willingness to amend the golf fee structure to allow any active member of the armed forces to play golf at in-county rates at any county golf course. Senator Bateman accepted the resolution on behalf of Senator James Beach, Chair of the Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee

Beginning immediately, active military personnel, regardless of their permanent place of residence, will not be required to pay an in-county or out-of-county registration fee and will be permitted to play the county courses at the county resident rate.

“This is a small gesture to show our appreciation for the commitment of our military personnel in these very difficult times,” stated Dot Paluck, Chair of the Park Commission Golf Committee.

Showing of an active military ID will allow play at any of the five County courses for in-county rates. The County facilities include Neshanic Valley, South Branch Road, Neshanic Station, NJ; Green Knoll, Garretson Road, Bridgewater, NJ; Spooky Brook at Colonial Park, Somerset, NJ; Warrenbrook, Warrenville Road, Warren, NJ; Quail Brook, New Brunswick Road, Somerset, NJ)

Green fees at Green Knoll, Spooky Brook, Warrenbrook, and Quail Brook are $24.00 Mondays to Thursdays and $28.00 for adults Friday to Sunday and holidays. Neshanic Valley rates are $50.00 Monday to Thursday and $60.00 Friday to Sunday and holidays and include a gas cart.

NESHANIC STATION, NJ – The Somerset County Park Commission Neshanic Valley Golf Course is the subject of a nationally distributed feature article by the United States Golf Association recognizing the facility for environmental consciousness. Neshanic Valley has earned two significant environmental recognitions, certified as an “Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” by the Audubon International program and recognized as a “River-Friendly Golf Course” by the New Jersey Water Supply Authority (NJWSA).

Neshanic Valley was the 24th course in New Jersey and the 704th in the world to receive the Audubon honor and the second “River-Friendly Golf Course” in the main stem Raritan River area. The Park Commission’s Quail Brook Golf Course in Somerset, New Jersey was the first to receive this recognition.

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Africa, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, and Southeast Asia have also achieved certification in the program.

To attain certification, a course must demonstrate a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas including Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.

The Neshanic Valley wildlife sanctuary features bluebird boxes throughout the venue and all the holding ponds have been stocked with bass and grass carp with fishing prohibited. Park Rangers have assisted prospective Eagle Scouts with wildlife projects; one scout built 15 bluebird boxes and another constructed wood duck all along the river. There are also five purple martin boxes and bat houses that the staff created.

Green Knoll, Spooky Brook, and Warrenbrook golf courses are also adhering to the tenets of the program with official recognition expected in the near future.

In addition, for the past two years, the course has been formally recognized for Environmental Stewardship by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Native fescue and environmentally sensitive areas encompass a little more than a third of the property. Signs posted throughout the course prevent golfers from entering environmentally sensitive areas (ESA), while carts are forbidden from the non-irrigated fescue areas, which by the middle of the season add a golden touch to the meadowland-style layout.

“Protection of our environment and our natural resources are of primary concern throughout the Park Commission,” stated Darrell Marcinek, Director of Golf Maintenance. “The staff at all five of our golf courses fully understands the importance of these programs and work every day to assure compliance with the responsibilities set forth.”

County-run Neshanic Valley has hosted sectional qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Amateur Public Links and will be a sectional qualifying site in June for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links

Ponies Are Waiting at Lord Stirling Stable

AT LORD STIRLING STABLE

Somerset County Park Commission Lord Stirling Stable, located at 256 South Maple Avenue in Basking Ridge, is welcoming young equestrians to participate in Lead Line Pony Ridesand Pony Parties.

Lead Line is the perfect way to introduce children under 12 years old to the enjoyment of horsemanship, riding a pony or gentle horse while led by a parent or guardian in an outdoor fenced area or in the Pony pavilion on the Stable grounds.

The child must be old enough to sit up and hold onto the saddle without assistance. A Stableworker will demonstrate the techniques of leading the horse as needed. ASTM/SEI approved riding helmets are required and are available for use. Fee for the Lead Line half-hour ride is $10.00 for Somerset County residents and $12.00 for out-of-county on weekdays and $11.00 and $13.00 on weekends.

Pony Parties to celebrate birthdays and other special events are also available seven days a week at Lord Stirling Stable. Parents will lead two ponies around the Pony Pavilion for 45 minutes, followed by an hour and fifteen minutes in the climate-controlled Party Room. Fee for the Pony Party is $175 for Somerset County residents and $250 if living out-of-county. Inflatable Pin the Tail on the Donkey, ring toss, horse shoes, and other children’s games are available to rent for $10 each. Pony-themed party favors, invitations, paper goods, and special souvenirs (appropriate for girls or boys) are available for purchase.

EEC Naturalist Earns Governor's Award

Cathy Schrein, Manager of Environmental Science at the Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center, has announced that Naturalist Daryl Ann Villard has been selected to receive a Governor’s Award in Arts Education sponsored by the NJ Department of Education and NJ Arts Education Partnership – the highest leader award for achievement in the State of New Jersey. Villard was nominated by the Art Educators of New Jersey as a result of receiving the AENJ John Pappas

Art Educators of New Jersey is dedicating to the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of quality instruction in visual arts programs throughout New Jersey. Over 1,400 members include public and private school art teachers, art supervisors, students, museum educators, nationally recognized authors, and individuals actively involved in national and international leadership in art education.

Ms. Villard earned the award for her efforts in organizing the annual “Nature Through a Child’s Eyes” children’s art show. The exhibit annually offers over 300 pieces of art that are created by Somerset County kindergarten through sixth grade students. The works communicate their views of nature and the environment though application of textures, shapes and colors.

The AENJ Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 4:30 P.M. at the New Jersey State Museum Auditorium in Trenton, New Jersey.

BRANCHBURG, NJ – Somesret County Park Commission has received notification that the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has formally recognized Neshanic Valley Golf Course for “Environmental Stewardship.” The goal of the Environmental Stewardship Initiative is to encourage regulated entities to improve their environmental performance beyond the minimum requirements of existing rules & regulations. The intent is to showcase the achievements of members of the regulated community and serve as an information resource to encourage others to follow.

The recognition is based on the recently complete annual compliance inspection that identified three categories for recognition:

Volunteer Opportunities

The Somerset County Park Commission is all about the people of Somerset County- our park visitors and the volunteers and employees who assure that every visit to our parks exceeds expectations. While our active and passive parks and our programs and activities rely on both of these groups, it is our volunteers who are a most cherished resource.

Volunteer opportunities are available in almost every facet of the Park Commission’s operation. Individuals interested in wildlife and resource conservation may participate in park clean up projects and trail construction/maintenance. Our Volunteer Park Patrol, continues to play an important role in maintaining the trails at Washington Valley Park and the Sourland Mountain Preserve by patrolling with an eye out for safety hazards and trail erosion. There are also opportunities in garden docent programs, planting, general maintenance, horse grooming, and stable cleaning.

In the instructional areas, the Park Commission welcomes volunteers with skills and interest in athletics, crafts, dance, cooking, and theater and vocal arts. Volunteers are also needed to help with the Junior Golf summer program, to act as Naturalists assistants, to assist with the Therapeutic Recreation programs, and to serve as helpers with equestrian classes. Volunteer assistance is also needed for special events to help with facilities setup and breakdown, historical reenactments, parking, and visitor services.

Scout, school and corporate groups contribute thousands of hours annually to Park Commission activities and 2009 has been no exception. At the Environmental Education Center volunteers from Johnson and Johnson Ethicon planted native aquatic plants in the coconut fiber logs along the bank of BrantaPond as part of a major bank restoration project. Pfizer corporate volunteers contributed their time planting and landscaping an area around the EEC building.

Five Eagle Scout Service Projects were completed at the EEC including: two bank restoration areas along Branta Pond; wildlife habitat restoration along Lord Stirling Road; trail drainage and repair; and building new outdoor benches for the Maple Sugar demonstration area.

Eastern Mountain Sports, L’oreal, and Orthp Diagnostics employees assisted with trail work in the Sourland Mountain Preserve and Washington Valley Park. Various Scout groups worked with the Park Rangers to help maintain the trails. Eagle Scout candidates provided many improvements throughout the park system including maintaining trails, building bird boxes and a kiosk and cleaning up a cemetery.
